The Mirror newspaper recently broke the story about their own readership. The paper reported that 32 million adults across the UK read the mirror across all digital platforms. This was according to Comscore , an industry body.

The newspaper competes very closely with The Sun newspaper. Editor-in-Chief Lloyd Embley said in this report , “It’s been a challenging year across the board but these results show just how hard the Mirror teams have worked every day for their readers, delivering everything from political scoops to breaking sports and entertainment.

Interestingly, The Sun newspaper, a few months ago, had said that they are the most read newspaper in the UK with 36.5 million readers (according to industry body PAMCo ).

The newspaper report goes on to say, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have spoken up for our readers, holding the Government to account on failures while celebrating our NHS heroes and urging greater freedoms for Sun families to see each other and enjoy a pint at the pub.”

Just last year, it was the Daily Mail, celebrating its success – as, wait for it, the most read British newspaper.

Geordie Grieg, The Mail ’s editor was quoted by the Independent newspaper. He said, “humbled that our readers have backed us so magnificently and loyally by buying the paper to make us Britain’s bestselling paper.”

Last year was a bad year for most newspapers that rely on readers that buy copies at newsstands. The Guardian newspaper reported that both the FT and the i newspaper had reported a loss of more than 35 per cent in circulation because of the pandemic.

On the brighter side though, many English newspapers both in the UK and the US made huge gains in digital subscribers during the same period. The Press Gazette reported that newspaper added more than 100,000 new digital subscribers during the pandemic.
